I have recently purchased a PAYG O2(UK) Sony Ericsson Elm mobile. So far it seems to behave quite well, accessing Gmail via IMAP works flawlessly and the little surfing I have done with it seemed to work fine both on the mobile internet and on WIFI.

Using Bluetooth I managed to sync with Isync on my Macbook and up/download files to/from the phone.

So, can you use the phone for navigation? Yes, thanks to the effort of the Open Streetmap. You can download a java program GPSMID which allows you to convert OSM maps into java applications that run on the phone. You can download my precompiled maps:

Theses maps were made using OSM2GpsMid with for instance this property file and this planet extract of England for example. If you follow links on the GPSMID website you can find other planet extracts. The built-in aGPS receiver works without any problems and is detected automatically. I use this shell-script to download the planet extracts and this one to make all the maps.

For finding stars there is simple Star chart program.

To keep in touch with my Web 2.0 friends I use the built-in twitter and facebook applications.

For more geeky purposes there is also a ssh terminal: MidpSSH.

The Google Mail and Maps application downloaded from the Google's website work without flaw.

One thing I haven't checked out properly is Track my journey. It looks quite intriguing.
